Tokyo is the capital of Japan and it is one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world. Tokyo is huge and has a complex transport system so it is important to stay in an area that is convenient.

Popular places to stay include Shinjuku, Ginza, Shibuya and Roppngi. Try and stay somewhere close to a metro station. But staying in these areas can be pricey. Tokyo is known to be a notoriously expensive city to visit.

If you are looking to stay somewhere cheaper but equality as convenient, consider staying in the Shitamachi area. Asakusa and Ueno are both great choices.

THE GATE HOTEL ASAKUSA KAMINARIMON

We discovered this gem of a hotel in the heart of Asakusa called The Gate Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon. This hotel is like an oasis in the mist of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

The lobby of the hotel is situated on the 13th floor and as you step out of the elevator, you are greeted with a stunning panoramic view of the Sky Tree Tower and Kaminarimon!

LOCATION

The Gate Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon is a stone throw away from Kaminarimon shrine, the gate to the famous Sensoji Shrine. It is only a few minute walk from Asakusa Station (Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, Toei Asakusa Line).

We really liked where the hotel is situated as it is easily accessible from the airport and the major Tokyo stations. There is supermarket right next to the hotel and many many restaurants nearby.

ROOMS

There are 136 guestrooms in the hotel carefully designed by Shigeru Uchida and decorated with original artworks.

Some of the rooms have a clear view of the Sky Tree Tower which is a real treat! We stayed in 2 different rooms while we were there, one on the 9th floor and one on the 6th floor. From the 9th floor, we were able to see the Sky Tree Tower from our room and from the 6th floor; we had an excellent view of the Kaminarimon and Sensoji Shrine!

The breakfast is delicious and you can even enjoy it outdoor with the amazing view beside you. The only thing about breakfast is that sometimes you may have to wait a little bit for the main dish to be cooked for you if it is busy. Try and leave plenty of time to enjoy your breakfast.

ROOFTOP BAR

One of the most attract feature of this hotel is their exclusive rooftop bar on the 14th floor. The bar is available only for guests and their companions and again, it has an amazing view from the terrace!

It is a fantastic way to relax during the day and to enjoy a drink at night to unwind. This rooftop is so spectacular that sometimes it is used for TV channels to film firework displays from.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

The Gate Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon takes pride in their excellent customer service, known as omotenashi in Japanese. Omotenashi is the Japanese word for hospitality which focuses on being as welcoming as possible.

We are deeply impressed with the service from the start as we stepped into the hotel. We were welcomed with a cool drink and finger food.

Our first hotel room was a non-smoking room, but for some strange reason (maybe through the ventilation) we could smell smoke rather strongly on the second day. Being 4 months pregnant and we called and informed reception.

Within minutes, someone came up and told us we can move room. We were also upgraded to a better room! The whole process was fuss-free, quick and they were so apologetic about the situation.

When we checked-out, they kindly gave us a little prayer packet to wish us well in our pregnancy! So thoughtful!

OUR THOUGHTS

  • Amazing view, especially from the reception. We also enjoyed the view from of The SkyTree tower from our room
