Chania (Crete) With Kids

People think we are mad travelling with 2 toddlers! It is definitely hard work but well worth it.

In May, we flew to Chania in Crete. Crete is the largest of the Greek Islands. It’s so big that it has 2 airports!  We stayed for 7 nights at 2 amazing SeaCrete Hotels. If you haven’t read about our stay at Kalyves Beach Hotel, click HERE now!

CHANIA

Chania is known for it’s Venetian Harbour, picturesque streets and waterfront restaurants. We were fortunate enough to stay only 30minutes drive away.

You can either hire a car or take the bus from Kalyves into Chania. We hired a car from Kalives Travel and they provided us with a car seat and booster seat. They dropped the car off at our hotel and picked it up the next day. It was completely hassle free and the car was roomy, clean and very comfortable.

We had a relaxing time in Chania, soaking in the sights and enjoying a wonderful meal by the harbour. There is also a Maritime Museum there that I hear is worth the visit!

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF APTERA

Before going to Chania, we made a quick stop at the Archaeological Site of Aptera. It’s only 15 mins away from our hotel and it only cost 4 Euros to visit (children are free). You can visit the Roman cisterns, Roman bath and the impressive theatre there.

This is a brilliant place to visit, especially for those interested in history.

ELAFONISI BEACH

No trip to Crete is complete without a visit to their famous pink beach, Elafonisi. The beautiful beach is fringed with pink coral, crystal clear waters and shallow lagoons. Although it is a popular destination, they really try to preserve its natural beauty as much as possible. There are limited beach bars and a toilet (payable), showers and changing cabins.

We went on an excursion to Elafonisi Beach with Let’s Crete which was booked through SeaCrete Hotels.

I will start off by saying that it wasn’t the easiest of journeys… The trip to the beach took around 4 hours all together. There were a lot of stops made on the way to pick up passengers from all the hotels in Chania. Unfortunately, Jacob got car sick.

They did stop for a break at a restaurant where you can use the bathroom and get some fresh air or food.

Although the journey was difficult for us, when we got to the beach, we knew then it was all worth it!

There is a very shallow lagoon on the right side of the beach. You can hire a parasol and 2 sun loungers for 15 euros a day. The beach café and toilets are located right behind as well.

The water was crystal clear and warm. Our boys spent the whole time in the lagoon, digging up the sand and splashing around.

The excursion allows around 3 hours on the beach, which was plenty of time for a little stroll and a spot of relaxation (sort of… I mean, we do have 2 kids!)

The coach journey back was much easier and shorter. They stop at a restaurant and you have about an hour for some food. The trip back was around 2 hours and the kids slept for most of it.

Overall, I am glad we went on the excursion. Elafonisi is a must when you visit Crete!
